Roughcasting Specialists Serving Central Scotland
Roughcasting is what we do best. It's the finish that has protected Scottish homes for generations — a tough, weather-resistant coating that shrugs off driving rain and hard frosts while giving your walls a clean, uniform appearance. If you've been searching for reliable roughcasters near you, AG Rendering Ltd brings time-served experience to every job, from patch repairs to complete re-roughcasting of your home.

What Is Roughcasting?
Roughcasting — sometimes called wet dash or harling — is a traditional render where small stones or chips are mixed through the final coat and cast onto the wall, creating a textured, highly durable surface. Its close relative, dry dash (the modern pebble dash method), involves throwing the aggregate onto a fresh receiver coat. Both create finishes ideally suited to Scotland's climate: the texture sheds rainwater, resists cracking and hides minor imperfections that would show on a smooth render.
Our Roughcasting Services
- Full re-roughcasting — Stripping tired, cracked or bossed render back to the substrate and applying a complete new system.
- New-build roughcasting — Working with builders and developers on new homes and extensions.
- Wet dash and dry dash finishes — Traditional throw-on wet dash or crisp modern dry dash in your choice of chip colour.
- Coloured roughcast systems — Through-coloured receivers including K Rend roughcast systems, so the finish never needs painting. Browse options in our roughcasting colours guide.
- Roughcast repairs — Patching blown or damaged areas and matching the existing finish.
Signs Your Roughcast Needs Replacing
Render rarely fails overnight. Look for cracking around windows and doors, hollow-sounding (bossed) patches when tapped, green staining or damp patches inside, and chips shedding from the wall. Caught early, repairs may suffice; left too long, water gets behind the render and the only fix is full replacement. We'll always tell you honestly which you need.
Why Choose AG Rendering for Roughcasting?
Roughcasting is a skill learned on the trowel, not from a manual. Our roughcasters prepare every substrate correctly — the step cheap quotes skip — and apply materials suited to your wall, whether it's stone, brick, block or an insulated system. The result is a finish that looks right and lasts decades. We cover Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Dundee and surrounding areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does roughcasting last?
- Properly applied, 30+ years. Most failures we see come from poor preparation, not the material.
- How much does roughcasting cost?
- Typically £45–£65 per m². Full guide: roughcasting costs.
- Can you roughcast over existing render?
- Sometimes, if it's sound and well-keyed. We test on survey and advise honestly.
- Wet dash or dry dash — which is better?
- Wet dash is the traditional Scottish finish and more forgiving on older walls; dry dash gives a sharper, more uniform modern look. We'll show you examples of both.
